Biography

Michael S. Hughes, MD is a hematology-oncology fellow at Columbia University Irving Medical Center with a research focus on plasma cell disorders, including AL amyloidosis and multiple myeloma.

Dr. Hughes earned his undergraduate degree magna cum laude in Classics from Harvard College and received his medical degree cum laude from Harvard Medical School. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center before joining Columbia for his subspecialty training.

He began his research career investigating immune checkpoint inhibitor–related toxicities and later focused on transplant outcomes in peripheral T-cell lymphoma. At Columbia, Dr. Hughes conducts research in the Lentzsch Laboratory, where he is studying novel fibril-targeting therapies in amyloidosis and survival disparities in multiple myeloma.

He is the recipient of the 2024 ASCO Young Investigator Award and has presented his work at national oncology conferences. Dr. Hughes remains dedicated to translating research insights into improved outcomes for patients with hematologic malignancies.
